Leading Marine Technian (Electrical) (LMT(L)) Jemal Bowler was born in Wellington and raised in Johnsonville, New Zealand. He attended Ōtaki College from January 2002 until December 2007. After finishing his last year at Ōtaki, Jemal joined the Royal New Zealand Navy on the 16th of January, 2008 as an Ordinary Marine Technician.

Since joining the RNZN, Jemal has gained qualifications in marine engineering, specializing in Electrical work as well as many leadership and firefighting skills. This led to Jemal gaining electrical registration as a qualified electrician.

Jemal’s sea service has included postings to Her Majesties New Zealand Ships TE MANA, CANTERBURY, and TAUPO. He has also had temporary postings to HMNZS MANAWANUI and TE KAHA. He has also served ashore at HMNZS PHILOMEL, the home of the Navy in Devonport, Auckland.

Whilst at Sea, Jemal has held the position of Electrical Systems Maintainer and as of September 2012, he has been posted to the Recruit Training Squadron as a recruit instructor, training the future of the Navy. Where he was one of Iriapa Moeau’s instructors.

Career highlights to date for Jemal are visiting many new and exotic countries, including China, Tuvalu and Singapore. Jemal also visited Turkey in April 2014 as a part of the NZDF guard contingent for the ANZAC Day commemoration Dawn and Chunuk Bair services at Gallipoli. This visit remains a highlight in his career to date so far. 

Jemal has found that although coming from a small town, he has achieved a lot in his career to date and is ample proof that anything is possible, regardless of where home is.

Jemal currently lives in Devonport, Auckland with his girlfriend Brittany who is a teacher. In his spare time, Jemal is a keen paintball player and can be found most weekends running around the local club fields in Auckland, painting the enemy.
