Horticulture Block

On the grounds of Ōtaki College is a two hectare block which has been designated as a Horticultural Block.
The students have the opportunity of an unique learning experience. The space allows students to explore many natural science concepts, hands-on problem solving and to grow their own food. The area has had a community garden established, with the aim of involving families in the school. Set amongst the fruit trees is a pergola, built by students and a pizza oven for them to cook and sample their produce. All students in the Year 7 & 8 Syndicate have a term each year in the garden, learning about their environment. The values of the programme which the school follows (PB4L - Positive Behaviour for Learning) are represented beautifully in the Horticultural Science subject. Respect for the environment, pride in the college, active learning and responsibility for caring for plants.
