Counselling

Ōtaki College has one trained Guidance Counsellor who is a member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors. We also have a Te Atakura counsellor. We are available to students, staff and parents and can be contacted by phone or email (see below).

What happens in counselling? In counselling you are assisted to explore your difficulties and concerns and to develop more resourceful and satisfying ways of living. As members of the NZ Association of Counsellors you can expect us to:
  • Be trustworthy
  • Respect your confidentiality
  • Listen to you carefully and sensitively
  • Assist you to sort out how you would like things to be different
  • Support you in changes you would like to make
How can counselling help? A counsellor can help you to:
  • Improve how you feel about yourself
  • Think about things in new ways
  • Reduce your stress
  • Open new options or directions for you
  • Plan and set goals
  • Explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviour
  • Improve your relationships
Parents often find it useful to talk issues through and to use us as a resource person. We have good knowledge of other agencies that may be of use. Please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns or would like further information on the services we can offer.
