Prime Minister John Key visits Ōtaki College

On 9th May Prime Minister John Key visited the College, accompanied by Member of Parliament for Ōtaki, Nathan Guy. Queenie Rikihana-Hyland led the visitors onto the school grounds and guided them through the whakatau, held in Te Whare Hui. The welcome ceremony, led by HoD Māori, Ricki Baker, and Principal, Andy Fraser, was enhanced by our Haka Group students performing the College Haka. The visitors were then taken on a tour of the college by Mr Fraser and our Heads of School. Mr Key chatted to students in their classes about their studies and aspirations. He commented afterwards on the friendly atmosphere of the College and how much he had enjoyed the students’ comments and enthusiasm. The visit concluded with a tour of the recently completed Technology Block and a fabulous morning tea which included sushi, mini burgers and cupcakes, all prepared by Ms De Kock’s Hospitality and Food Technology students.
