Waka Ama is still an unknown sport within our college one could say, however, we have been eminent at the National Secondary School Waka Ama competitions these past 4 years... With the assistance and guidance of Barbara Rudd, our teams have surpassed their own goals and have set some reasonable times during this time. Below is a summary of how well our Under 19 Girls team did in 2012.

Waka Ama 26th – 30th March 2012:

Under 19 - 500m
MaiaHeatLane Time Placing

Progression RacePlate Semi 2 of 33:00.823rd
Plate Final1 of 162:45.89 2nd

Under 19 - 250m
MaiaHeatLane Time Placing
Heat    1 of 10 1:13.713rd
Champ Semi 1 of 3171:12.383rd

Unfortunately we cannot take our Year 7 & 8 students away to these competitions as they are primarily for Secondary school students (Year 9 and above). Our aim though, is to begin training these students when they get to Year 8 in preparation for Year 9. Fundraising is a common denominator with all sports and there is an expectation that fundraising can be done prior to the end of the school year as these competitions are held in March (Term 1) of the following year. We encourage students to be proactive with their training and to come and join this growing sport at Ōtaki College.
