Thursday 1st March saw the Year 7 to 9 students of Ōtaki College experience a live theatre performance. Through the support of the NZ Festival, we were able to secure a showing of the play 'Ka Tito Au - Kupe's Heroic Journey', written by New Zealand Playwright and author, Apirana Taylor. Students were wowed by the solo performer, Tola Newbery, who through the art of story telling retold the legend of Kupe and his discovery of Aotearoa, New Zealand after pursuing Te Wheke-a-Muturangi, a giant octopus that was endangering his people’s fishing grounds in the Pacific. We were extremely fortunate to also have Apirana Taylor come and watch the show and answer student questions at the end of the performance. It was fantastic to hear Apirana's vision and inspiration for writing the play and also having it performed by one actor. We would like to thank the NZ Festival for bringing this fantastic performance to us, free of charge.
