On Tuesday 21 July, the Year 7&8s went to Wellington to see the WW1 exhibitions at the War Memorial and at Te Papa. This was the final chapter in their study of WW1, which had been going for the whole of term 2.

The students were divided into two groups to see the shows, swapping over at lunchtime. The students were able to see, smell and touch aspects of the exhibits, which brought home to them the horrors of war. At the War Memorial they followed the journey through the years of war with a young cadet, who had just signed up and finally they saw him with his grandchildren.

At Te Papa the students were introduced to individuals involved in war. One of these was Rikihana Carkeek, who is related to many of our students. One of the others saw his relative on the memorial plaque. They said “the experience made things realistic”.
