Uncover your Family Story – Otaki Family History Expo

The internet makes tracing ancestry easier. With FamilySearch or Ancestry.com you can type in the name of an ancestor and find his birth in England, his marriage in America and then his/her name in the electoral role in New Zealand. A great starting point, but what if you want to go deeper? Not all is online. You have to think creatively and use every snippet of information as a lead to understand their life circumstances and what was happening at that time.

Genealogy traces your lineage, Family History is more encompassing and looks beyond the bare bones of birth, marriage or death dates, and illustrates aspects like individual stories behind the facts, and relating them to a historical context.

This is where the Otaki Branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists steps in to present an opportunity for the Kapiti Coast and Horowhenua community. We have invited specialists to help you in putting the pieces together or to break down the brick walls you may have encountered. Among others, ancestry.com, FamilySearch, specialists in Scottish, Irish and English history and Whakapapa researchers will be on hand. There will be expert presentations, and advice on how to start your journey in family research.

Otaki Memorial Hall, Saturday 28th May from 10am to 4pm.
