Ōtaki College leaped into the spirit of the Kite Festival on Tuesday 1st March, with Year 7&8 students thoroughly enjoying kite workshops run by Australian kite maker, Tony Rice. The students made the most of this opportunity to learn all about the different facets of kite making from an expert. Tony’s design proved extremely successful and students produced some fantastic kites that were later trialled on the College field. With only a few exceptions, due to a small number of inevitable collisions, trees being in the wrong place at the wrong time and other similar difficulties, the kites reached dizzying heights. Year 7&8 Dean, Greg Whithair, said “kids got a great sense of satisfaction from the flying of the kites, especially as they were easy to fly and went extremely high”. In fact the only disadvantage to the100m strings was the effort required to safely wind them back in!
