Kapiti Island Trip March 2018

A group of students traveled by boat to the famous nature reserve on Kapiti Island, off the Kapiti Coast.
For the last 30 years there have been no mammal preditors on the island and therefore the trees and and birds and invertebrates have been able to flourish.
The group walked to the summit of the island (500m), from where they got a panoramic view of the Kapiti Coast all the way up to Otaki.

Dear Mr Manins,

I just want to say thank you again for the awesome two and a half years at Otaki College (2013-2015). I enjoyed it so much and I really miss it. This experience made me the person I am today. I have made so many memories and life experiences that I will never forget. I am so grateful for everything I had and still have. Thank you for putting me into that awesome family. I have now two families and love all of them. I have really enjoyed my time at Otaki College. It was so different to Germany but yet it felt like I have been living there my whole life. I loved all my subjects and learnt so much in the past few years. Thank you for amazing outdoor Education and international trips. I couldn't tell you which one would be my favourite one. I loved them all. Otaki College has amazing teachers and students and there is a great relationship between them.

I was and still am very sad that I had to go home. But am so grateful that I had the opportunity to go to New Zealand and stay for that long. And I know that I will come back at least for a visit. Otaki is my second home and honestly also the place where I think my heart belongs. From the very first day that I have been in New Zealand I had known that this is my home. And I will never give up on the dream to live in the country with the long white clouds and maybe even Otaki. One thing Otaki College has taught me is to never give up and to always try my best and hardest. And if I work hard enough it is possible to achieve everything I want. I can't thank you and everyone enough for the great time I had.

Also my parents send kind regards and they just want you to know that whenever you are overseas and in Germany you can stay at our house. So you are very welcome to come any time and stay with us.

Thank you so much for everything and I will see you again.

Yours sincerely

Ines :)

Kapiti Island

Takahe, Weka, Kereru, and Robins were all birds that the 19 International students had a close encounter with on their trip to Kapiti Island on 5 April 2016.  To have four Takahe (pictured) come out of the bush without any fear of humans was a magic experience, along with Weka that came right up to their shoes asking for bread crumbs.  The ferry ride across was exhilarating and the step walk up to the 521m summit a challenge.  The view from the tower at the top was breath-taking and gave the students a real sense of the geography of the Kapiti Coast.  A fabulous day was had by all, and finished off nicely with a Kapiti Ice-cream from Lindale.

The students were with Howard Manins (Director of International Education) and Ian McMillan (College Business Manager)
